5 Things Your Mom Never Told You About Makeup

Ever since I was a little girl, I have always been fascinated by mystery of makeup. I remember watching my mom at the mirror applying her makeup and thinking "How did she learn such things?"

Aren’t you thankful that we live in the age of the Internet so that we can watch videos on YouTube and learn how to properly apply makeup? Everything that we could possibly ever want to learn about makeup can be found online.

We can learn how to fill in our eyebrows, the best spots to apply blush for our face type, and other cool tricks that can help to enhance our look.

I’m pretty sure that our moms didn’t teach us any of the makeup tips below. (After all, I just learned about blow-drying my lashes a couple of weeks ago!) But to give our moms credit, the Internet wasn’t around then and times were a lot different.

Here’s The 5 Things Your Mom Probably Didn’t Tell You About Makeup:

1. Clean Makeup Brushes

This has to be the most important and most often broken rule. It may seem harmless to reuse a brush even on a clean face, however bacteria is always lurking; especially if there are active breakouts. A weekly cleanse is a must, and can help to prevent the spread of acne, clogged pores, and poor application caused by dirty brushes. A simple wash in baby shampoo or dish liquid followed by an alcohol mist is an affordable way to maintain your brushes as well as save your skin from harm.

Every artist needs a great tool set! Try Younique's Complete Brush Set. It is a must for any makeup lover, the Complete Brush Set includes all eight high-quality brushes for impeccable eye, cheek, and complexion makeup application. Carry the complete set with style in this convenient brush case.

2. Expiration Check

As with brushes, makeup itself can expire as it collects and grows bacteria. If ever a product starts to change shape, color, smell, or look off when applied, then it's time to repurchase or try something new. It's always good to go through your collection every 6 months and toss out things that either you haven't used in awhile or here’s the general rule of when to throw away your makeup:
  • Mascara: 3 months
  • Eye Shadow: 12 months
  • Lip Gloss: 12 months
  • Eye Liner: 12 months
  • Powder: 12-18 months
  • Blush: 2 years

3. Starts with Skincare and Primer

"Facials" are vital!! Always cleanse your face in the morning and at night! I am completely hooked on Younique's naturally based Illuminate facial cleanser and my skin as well. The makeup on top of it has never looked better.

Starting out with a blank, fresh canvas is vital for a flawless makeup application. Prepping what is underneath will help any products on top look more smooth and natural, as well as improve lasting time and evenness. Regular cleansing, exfoliation, toning and moisturizing is not only proper skincare, but also a perfect base for makeup.

Younique Glorious Face & Eye Primer creates a flawless canvas as it evens out the skin's texture, and primes and prepares the skin for premium application of mineral makeup. The resulting appearance is porcelain-perfect, velvety-soft skin with incredible long-wearing, sweat-resistant coverage of mineral makeup that lasts all day. Ingredients are naturally based, free of parabens, oils, synthetic fragrances, and cheap fillers. Suitable for all skin types.

4. Learn How To Highlight and Contour

I have a confession. I just learned how to highlight and contour...yes, yes I'm embarrassed to say [head down, hand over face]. I’ve always wanted to learn how to do this because who doesn’t want the illusion of a thinner face, smaller nose, nonexistent dark circles and more? Am I right?!

Here are the basics that I learned: To highlight, you want to pick two shades lighter than you would normally wear. To contour, you want to pick two shades darker than you would normally wear. The color you normally wear should be matched to your neck skin color, no where else. You always want to make sure to blend in small circles, especially by your jaw bone. No one wants to be two-toned down there.

5. "Magic" Mascara

Have you ever wanted longer lashes?? I mean, who doesn't these days. It usually comes with a high price tag and potentially harmful effects. Younique's best selling product with a pending patent on its formula, the 3D Fiber Lash Mascara dramatically enhances and magnifies the appearance of your own lashes 300x.

Our simple three-step process combines Transplanting Gel and Natural Fibers to help create the appearance of incredible thickness and volume to your existing lashes. Watch as your lashes transform into something you have only dreamed of! The 3D Fiber Lashes are water resistant but easily wash off with warm water and facial cleanser at the end of the day. Try it! It will quickly become your favorite makeup must-have!

**Tips & Tricks**

No Mess Mascara: When you put on your mascara, do you get mascara on your lashes and everywhere else too? Try using a business card, or even a plastic spoon to keep mascara on only your lashes! I finally found a reason to use all the cards you get when you go out to a bar with the girls.

Blow Dry Those Lashes Girl: After applying your mascara, use the blow dryer on the warm setting to curl your lashes and dry your mascara. Your lashes will go from average to BAM in a matter of seconds! I like to apply my Younique 3D Fiber Lashes (transplanting gel, fibers, transplanting gel, fibers, transplanting gel) to my lashes before I blow dry. It definitely gives my lashes a nice lift and a very noticeable difference.

Note: If you use a lash curler to curl your lashes, try warming the lash curler up with a blow dryer before using it on your lashes. It really makes a huge difference too! BUT be careful not to pull your lashes out!

Here's to great success. xoxo Ang
